It’s no secret that I’m a “history buff”. I love history from around the world, from America and from here in New Jersey. I especially love when we can talk about history right here on the Jersey Shore. This time we are looking at churches here in Ocean County, the oldest church.
I contacted the Toms River Historical Preservation Commission and asked for help in identifying the oldest church in Ocean County. Looking at their information it looks like we are going to be staying here in Toms River, it was originally known as Cedar Grove Methodist Episcopal Church…..Oldest Standing Church in Ocean County, still serving weekly Mass, is the Cedar Grove United Methodist Church at Tom’s River. The church is nearly 170 years old, originally built on January 10, 1853. The church is still open and serves mass regularly. Cedar Grove United Methodist Church in Toms River is located on Bay Avenue.
In addition to the church, Cedar Grove Cemetery also has a lot of history. Originally, Applegate Cemetery dates back to 1800. The cemetery still stands adjacent to the church grounds.
Other historic churches in Ocean County include the Potter House in Murray Grove and the Quaker Meeting Houses in Barnegat and Little Egg Harbor/Tuckerton.
Shout out to SJ Banks who let me know that there is a “part” of the oldest church in Ocean County in Manahawkin. The Old Manahawkin Baptist Church, whose current building dates from 1864, contains part of the original from around 1758. Below is a photo I took several years ago of the steeple at the site of Manahawkin.
