New York Assembly and Senate Group Homes Bill

According to a report by Tom Eschen of the WRGB, the New York State Assembly and Senate have passed a bill to improve living conditions in group homes in the wake of the Covid pandemic -19.

The bill, sponsored by Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara, would establish a task force to improve living conditions in New York State group homes. Regarding the bill, Santabarbara said: “The failure of communication during this time is something we cannot see happening again. This bill aims to ensure that family members and people with disabilities have a voice to voice their concerns, it creates a mechanism that was right there.”

According to the report, group homes have been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic three times more than the general public in New York. Due to the ease of transmission of the Covid-19 virus, people living in crowded conditions were often at increased risk of contracting the virus. Prisons, homeless shelters and hospitals also saw an increased risk of Covid-19 as social distancing was difficult, if not impossible.

Beyond the scope of the pandemic, Santabarbara believes the task force will give people living in group homes a voice to voice their concerns about other issues as well, saying, “If a chaotic situation like the pandemic happens again, we need to make sure the lines of communication are open. . That is what this bill is going to do, it will establish that and ensure that those voices are heard. “

After passing the state Assembly and Senate, the bill now awaits final approval from Governor Kathy Hochul.
